Ants are one of the most successful groups of insects in the animal kingdom. They are of particular interest because they are social insects and form highly organized colonies or nests which sometimes consist of millions of individuals. Colonies of invasive ant species will sometimes work together and form super-colonies, spanning a very wide area of land. Ant colonies are sometimes described as superorganisms because they appear to operate as a single entity.

CONTROL
1. Keep all areas free of food debris. Pay particular attention to floors and the area around tables, chairs, kitchen sinks and cookers
2. Used utensils should not be left overnight, but washed immediately after use
3. Tie garbage in refuse bags before disposing
4.Wipe away spilled sweet drinks and food straightaway
5. Locate the nest(s) and treat with a residual insecticide. Try to follow ants back from the food source.
Dust in the voids of outside ground-floor walls, treatment of cracks in the slab with a residual insecticide, and barrier treatment gives the best control. The direct injection with an appropriately labeled high-pressure aerosol (160 psi) into the entrance/exit opening in the crack or expansion joint of a concrete floor is extremely effective. Baiting may be necessary

Type of Ants
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants 1/4 inch (6.4mm) for a worker up to 3/4 inch (19.1mm) for a queen. Nesting in damp locations, carpenter ants prefer to excavate wood that has been damaged by water.
Black Ants
Belonging to the Monomorium minimum family. A very small, black ant closely related to the Pharaoh ant (an indoor pest ant). It nests in soil under rocks, logs or debris.
Pavement Ants
This ant gets its name from commonly locating its nest in or under cracks in pavement. They're about 1/16-1/8" (2.5-4 mm) long; queens about 3/8" (8 mm) long.
FIRE Ants
These ants get their common name from their ability to inflict especially painful bites and stings. A mature colony can produce as many as 4,500 swarmers during the year. Queens live 2-6 years. Males die shortly after mating.
